Ulysses S. Grant was at first, an obscure officer in the army who had fought in the Mexican-American War that few knew very well. However, over time, after numerous victories and successes on the battlefield suring the Civil War, Grant became more and more well known. Grant led several major Union victories against the Confederate Army, including the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Vicksburg, the Battle of Appomattox, etc. Grant was appointed Commander of the Entire Union Army. After the war, Grant's success as a general earned him the title of 18th President. As President Grant went on to do more great things for his nation.
